Virtual Reality-assisted therapy

Virtual Reality-assisted therapy is an evidence-based, innovative treatment targeting anxiety and phobias using the principles of exposure therapy.

Exposure therapy, the gold standard for phobias, involves gradually exposing yourself to your feared situation (eg, flying), in a gradual, step-wise way, whilst using strategies to help stay calm. The goal is in being able to desensitize yourself to your feared situation, and learn that in most reasonable situations in life (eg, taking a flight), you’re safe.

Whilst ‘real life’ exposure therapy is the most effective way to really overcome phobias – it isn’t always practical or accessible, which is where virtual reality comes in.

At Illumen, we have access to innovative VR materials and technology that will allow you to work on overcoming your phobia. Using simple technology, we can help you work through a variety of realistic scenes, from the comfort of your own home.

Phobias we treat using VR assisted exposure therapy include:

  • Fear of flying
  • Fear of needles/injections
  • Fear of public speaking
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophia)
  • Social anxiety
  • Fear of dogs
  • Fear of insects
  • Fear of mice and rats
